Our Hinckley based family business was proud to celebrate VE Day with a beautiful musical tribute.
Last week saw the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II across Europe and we paid tribute to remember the efforts of a generation that has enabled us to live with freedom as a result of their efforts.
As Joseph Barsby, Managing Director of G. Seller explains, “As a family business that has been around for over 100 years and with our ancestors living and serving through the War, we wanted to do something special, symbolic and memorable to make the anniversary appropriately.”
As Joseph adds, “With everything that is going on in the world at the moment the anniversary gave us all the opportunity to stop and reflect and what better way than to hear from some talented local musicians, the current generation, play tributes to the previous generation. We were witness to something truly special from Christopher Small and Eloise Berry.”
As part of the VE Day Celebration talented musician, Christopher Small played ‘We’ll Meet Again’ on the euphonium. It was a beautiful rendition for the 75th Anniversary of VE Day and he was followed by the incredible voice of Eloise Berry who performed ‘We’ll Meet Again‘ as part of the nationwide sing-a-long!
As Joseph concludes, “It was a truly beautiful way to remember the past and it is important that we do continue to pass on the message around the loss of lives and the incredible courage of individuals during the wars that have given freedom to the current generation. History should never be lost and it is important to remember. The sacrifices made by previous generations. The tributes from both Christopher and Eloise were poignant reminders of how the current generation are able to celebrate the past and continue to give life to these milestones of history in the modern world with incredible musical tributes.”
During the current pandemic we are all living in uncertain times with each new day taking us into uncharted territory. It is at times like this that community really does come to the fore and having been a family business in and around Hinckley for over 100 years, we know how strong our local community is.
As Joseph Barsby, Managing Director of G. Seller explains, “There are so many wonderful things going on in our towns and villages to help others but with so many people staying at home we wanted to do something to make a difference, to celebrate our local heroes and to show them that there is a lot of love for what they are doing to help protect and save lives, from those on the front line at hospitals to essential workers providing food to the supermarkets and those supporting charities to name a few.”
“The children of our staff have already been creating pictures that are now proudly on display within our windows in Hinckley but we wanted to do more and get more people involved. To that end, with community spirit and support in mind, we have created some templates that can be downloaded, coloured in and displayed in windows around our towns and villages.”
The aim of this community campaign is to create ‘windows of colour’ and a ‘showcase of support’ to cheer up those key workers as they drive past on their way to another shift, or on their way home.
As Joseph adds, “There is so much support within the community for everyone that is helping to make a difference and fight the virus and what better way to show that love and support than windows of colour and appreciation. We know our community and the people within it really do pull together at times of need and we wanted to do something to make a difference. It will be uplifting for everyone to see the pictures too.”
People are also being encouraged to shared their images on social media using the hashtags #WeCare and #ProudofAllOurHeroes.
As Joseph concludes, “It is important that we come together as a community and thank those that are making a difference. I would also like to add that I am immensely proud of our team who are continuing to act with compassion and pride working with families at their time of need to and for them to know that they too are making a difference each and every day. This campaign enables us to show support for everyone making a difference and it is also a great opportunity to ‘spread some colour across our town’ too. We look forward to seeing the collection of pictures grow on social media.”

The financial controller is an integral part of the day to day running of our company, working alongside the full and part time team. The hours are 8:30am – 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.
High level of aptitude for Sage 50 accounts, desktop including:
- Reconciling the bank
- Sales & Purchase Ledger
- Providing the monthly management accounts
The ideal person will be:

The UK is to introduce ‘Jack’s Law’ in April, the new legal right to paid parental bereavement. Essentially, parents who suffer the devastating loss of a child will be entitled to 2 weeks’ statutory leave when the legislation comes into effect.
The Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay Regulations, which will be known as Jack’s Law in memory of Jack Herd whose mother Lucy campaigned tirelessly on the issue, will implement a statutory right to a minimum of 2 weeks’ leave for all employed parents if they lose a child under the age of 18, or suffer a stillbirth from 24 weeks of pregnancy, irrespective of how long they have worked for their employer.
Parents will be able to take the leave as either a single block of 2 weeks, or as 2 separate blocks of one week each taken at different times across the first year after their child’s death. This means they can match their leave to the times they need it most, which could be in the early days or over the first anniversary.
Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom said, “There can be few worse experiences in life than the loss of a child and I am proud that this government is delivering ‘Jack’s Law’, making us the first country in the world to do so. When it takes effect, Jack’s Law will be a fitting testament to the tireless efforts of Lucy Herd, alongside many charities, to give parents greater support.”
Lucy Herd said, “In the immediate aftermath of a child dying, parents have to cope with their own loss, the grief of their wider family, including other children, as well as a vast amount of administrative paperwork and other arrangements. A sudden or accidental death may require a post-mortem or inquest; there is a funeral to arrange; and there are many other organisations to contact, from schools to benefit offices.”
“When I started this campaign 10 years ago after the death of my son Jack, I always hoped that a positive change would happen in his memory. Knowing that nearly 10 years of campaigning has helped create ‘Jack’s Law’ is the most wonderful feeling, but it is bittersweet at the same time. I am so grateful to all those involved who have helped make this possible. I was told many times that I would not succeed but Jack’s Law will now ensure that bereaved parents are better protected in the future.”
Alison Penny, Coordinator of the National Bereavement Alliance said that “Many parents are forced to make hard choices about returning to work at a desperately difficult time following their child’s death, fearing loss of pay or job security if they take time off. We welcome the significant step the government has made in introducing minimum provision for parents, and would like to see employers demonstrate a genuine commitment to grieving colleagues by treating them compassionately and with the support they need.”
Joseph Barsby, Managing Director of G. Seller welcomes the new legislation adding that “The loss of a child is difficult for any family and we welcome this change as it affords precious time to parents to do what needs to be done without the pressures of work commitments.”
The right to parental bereavement leave and pay makes the UK one of a very few countries worldwide to offer such support, and the first to offer a full 2 weeks. It will come into force on 6 April 2020, subject to Parliamentary approval of the legislation. Parents employed in a job for 6 months or more will also be able to claim statutory pay for this period, in line with the approach for other parental entitlements, such as paternity leave and pay.
As we enter into the new year G. Seller are delighted to be able to give recognition to another long standing member of staff for their service.
Rhonda Astill, Operations Director at G. Seller has been recognised with an award for her 15 years of loyal service to the business, in which time she has made a real difference to the families that she has had the privilege to serve.

Alison Wormleighton is the newest addition to the G. Seller family and will be providing more support for people when they need it most.
Alison is joining the team as part of the Bereavement Support service that is being put together.
The Bereavement Support programme has been launched as a service to the community, making sure that there is support and care for families following the funeral.
As Joseph Barsby, the third generation of the family to lead the business explains, “We are truly passionate about what we do and have always gone the extra mile to support the families that we have the privilege to look after when they need it most. Our team are fantastic and are always going the extra step to support families and individuals but we recognise that there is more support needed following the following, especially in readjusting after the loss of someone close.”
A range of services is now available including 1-1 support for individuals providing a safe confidential space to explore difficult thoughts and emotions around their grief, bereavement groups bringing people together to recognise that they are not alone, share their experience, possibly learn from others and face their grief at a pace which feels right for them and a monthly social coffee morning which will be informal, giving everyone the opportunity to have a ‘cuppa and a chat.’
As Alison concludes, “Adjusting to life after losing someone close can be very daunting but we are passionate about providing the local community with the much needed care and support during this difficult time. I am looking forward to the new role within a family firm that clearly places family at the very heart of what they do, taking the time to support individuals when they need it most.”
